Is My Data Safe With Instagram

It seems like every other day there’s a new headline about a massive data breach. So, you may be wondering, is my data safe with Instagram? In this post, we’ll break down the security measures Instagram has in place to protect your information and give you some tips on how to keep your data as safe as possible. Keep reading for more info.!

Is My Data Safe With Instagram

1. How Does Instagram Keep My Data Safe?

At the end of last year, Facebook (the parent company of Instagram) announced it had discovered a security breach in which hackers got away with access to nearly 50 million accounts .

The good news is that no passwords were compromised in this security breach because Instagram doesn’t store plain text passwords for Instagram accounts. Instead, they use what’s called a hashing and salting system that’s nearly impossible to decrypt.

Hashing and Salting:

Instagram uses a process called hashing and salting to protect your password information.

That way, when you enter in your password info on Instagram, it is encrypted through an irreversible process which turns it into jumbled characters.

Even if the hackers got access to your password, it wouldn’t matter because they wouldn’t be able to decrypt it back into plain text and read your email or see your photos.

2. What If I’m a Businessman And I Want to Use Instagram?

Data security for businesses using Instagram is equally as important as protecting your information on the platform.

With so many of us using social media every day, businesses need to be sure their networks are secure too! It’s important that you use strong passwords and don’t reuse them across multiple platforms.

Don’t include any personal information like birthday dates in your username, and use two-factor authentication wherever possible! For more tips on how business can protect themselves from data breaches, check out our blog post here .

3. What You Can Do To Keep Your Information Safe:

While we know that there’s no such thing as a 100% foolproof system, by following some basic steps and using common sense, we can all help to minimize the risks of personal data getting into the wrong hands. To get started:

Use Strong Passwords On Every Site You Visit:

We highly recommend downloading LastPass (it’s free), which will automatically generate complex new passwords for each site, and then store them in an encrypted vault that only you have access to.

From then on, any time you create a new login or need to change your password, just click into the website in Last Pass and it will automatically change your password – you never have to remember all of your individual site usernames and passwords again!

Don’t Reuse Passwords On Multiple Platforms:

This is a biggie. Every time there’s a data breach where usernames or passwords are compromised, hackers try the list of breached accounts on every platform, including Instagram.

If you’ve reused your password across several accounts, it makes it super easy for hackers to get into everything! Be sure to use Last Pass’ Advanced Security feature when signing up for new sites so this won’t be an issue in the future.

Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Wherever Possible:

2FA is another security measure that adds an extra layer of protection by requiring both your password and another form of authentication before you can log in.

This is typically done with an app like Google Authenticator, which will generate random numbers that you enter with your password whenever you attempt to log in.

There are many sites that offer 2FA including Facebook , Twitter , Gmail , iCloud, Amazon . It’s becoming more popular among social media networks because it helps prevent compromised accounts!

Double Check Your Privacy Settings:

One of the most common ways data is leaked or hacked into is when companies accidentally disclose user information through unsecure privacy settings.

To be safe, always double check your Instagram’s Privacy & Security settings .

The good news is that Instagram has pretty high security measures already built-in – meaning they make it nearly impossible for third-party apps to gain access to your account – which is great news for our #teamhurry.
